Memphis Tournament

Two Mighty Bluebird wrestlers had a very impressive showing in the first tournament the Bluebirds had ever entered. The first matches for both Layne Hatcher and Jackson Marchant wrestled in the 3rd to 5th grade age division despite being 1st and 3rd graders respectively. Layne Hatcher went 2-2 and Jackson Marchant went 1-2 as they got their feet wet in wrestling. These were very respectable finishes and they are just getting started.

December 2nd, 2006

Dragon's Elementary School Wrestling Tournament

Mighty Bluebird wrestlers had a very impressive showing for just wrestling now only a couple of weeks. Tristian Nelson was the champion in the 65 pound weight division going 3-0 with 3 pins. Layne Hatcher finished 2nd in the 70 pound weight class with two wins and one loss including one win by a pin and another 14-1 superior decision. Jackson Marchant finished in 2nd place in his 73 pound class with two wins and one loss with both wins coming by a pin. A new star was born when Joshua Ayliffe placed 2nd in the 55 pound class with two wins by decision and one loss. Joshua Best continued to show his improvement losing his first two matches, but recording two pins in his last two matches to finish the tournament at 2-2 for a 4th place finish.

December 16, 2006

Oklahoma Tournament

The Mighty Bluebirds decided to see how high the bar is raised nationally when they went into the toughest area of the country to wrestle…Oklahoma. With the gym completely packed full and wrestlers completely covering every inch of the mat approximately 1,000 wrestlers wrestled in the tournament. The wrestlers were so impressive that even Coach Hatcher was shocked. Tristian Nelson finished in the Runner-Up position with 23 wrestlers in his weight class at the 65 pound class. Layne Hatcher followed Tristian’s performance with a Runner-up finish at 70 pounds with 19 wrestlers in his weight class and Jackson Marchant also finished in the Runner-Up position with 10 wrestlers in his 75 pound weight class. The fact that the Bluebirds have only been wrestling for just about a month to be able to go in and compete with Oklahoma wrestlers who have been wrestling in most cases for a couple of years was very impressive. The Bluebirds made an impression on the Oklahoma wrestlers as they landed three of the four wrestlers that they took event in the finals. Our fourth wrestler, Austin Blair was wrestling his first matches ever in heavy weight with less than a weeks practice.

Brute-Adidas Nationals Tournament Kansas City

The Mighty Bluebirds attended their first ever National Wrestling Tournament in Kansas City for the Adidas/Brute National Championships. It's the first year that they offered National Championships for grades 1st thru 8th grade as they have been offering National Championships in the 9th thru 12th grade for several years. The Bluebirds did amazingly well for a first year wrestling club. Layne Hatcher led the way winning the National Championship in the 1st grade division at 68 pounds. He won his first match over the Kansas State Champion by a score of 10-4, he won his second match 7-2, and in the finals he pinned his opponent in the first round in 25 seconds with a headlock. He is the 1st National Champion in Arkansas history and was named an Adidas/Brute All-American. For his three decisive victories he was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 1st Grade Division for all the weight classes.

In addition, Jackson Marchant, finished 6th at 75 pounds in the third grade division and was named an Adidas/Brute All-American. Cole Cooper finished 7th in the 75 pound division. Joshua Best finished 7th in the 60 pound division and Joshua Ayliffe finished 8th in the 55 pound second grade division, all being named Adidas/Brute All-Americans as they recognized the top 8 wrestlers as All-Americans.

Kevin Knox and Michael Pugh also wrestled in the tournament, but ran into some extremely tough wrestlers as both have had an outstanding wrestling season for their first year with the Bluebirds winning many tournaments. You can be assured that the Bluebirds will be returning for next year's National Meet and look forward to working harder this off season.

Versus Open Wrestling Tournament Broken Arrow, OK

The Mighty Bluebirds attended their first tournament of the year in Broken Arrow, OK for the Versus Open Wrestling Tournament. Although the numbers were not large for this tournament the competition was extremely difficult as the kind of kids that were out wrestling in Oklahoma in early November were the ones who were serious about it and primarily wrestled only. The Bluebirds took six wrestlers to the tournament and came away with one 1st Place finish, a 2nd Place finish, and two 3rd Place finishes. Layne Hatcher won the 75 pound division for 8 & Under with all three wins by coming by pin in the first round. Layne's tournament was highlighted when he beat a wrestler who had finished 3rd in the Reno World Championships when he pinned him with a cow throw in the first period. Layne got off to a great start after winning last years National Championship in Kansas City.

Jackson Marchant finished 2nd at the 80 pound weight division for 10 & Under. Because the tournament was small they combined the 80 & 85 pound weight divisions and Jackson was beaten by a wrestler who most likely weighed 85 pounds. An All-American last year, Jackson finished the tournament 1-1 making the finals with four wrestlers in his weight class.

Michael Pugh wrestled at the 10 & Under weight class for 70 pounds and finished the tournament with two wins and one loss. His one loss came to an All-American and he rebounded with two quality wins.

Joshua Ayliffe, Hunter Jones, and Tristian Nelson all wrestled two matches and came away with no victories, but gained valuable experience wrestling the very tough Oklahoma competition.

This was the first tournament that 4-Time NCAA Champion, Coach Pat Smith attended and it was the second tournament that former Alma College collegiate coach, Bruce Dickey attended. The Bluebirds now support the strongest coaching staff in youth wrestling in the nation.

  • Layne Hatcher, 1st Place at 75 pounds
  • Jackson Marchant, 2nd Place at 80 pounds
  • Michael Pugh , 3rd Place at 70 pounds

November 16-17th, 2007

Cliff Keen Kick Off Classic Tulsa, OK

The Bluebirds attended the Cliff Keen Kick Off Classic in Tulsa, OK on November 16th and 17th. The tournament had over 2,000 youth wrestlers and was as tough of a national tournament as any in the country. Kids wrestled from all 50 states and the Bluebirds faired well against the toughest competition in the country. Layne Hatcher led the way for the Bluebirds finishing 4th at 8 & Under in the 75 pound bracket. Wrestlers were awarded medals who finished in the top 6 places. Layne received a bye in the first round, pinned his first opponent in a front headlock in the first period kind of lost a decision to the eventual Champion in the 3rd round, pinned his next opponent in the 1st round with a headlock and then lost a heartbreaker for 3rd place in his final match. Although he finished 4th he proved that he could wrestle with the best wrestlers in the country and was just a move or two away from winning the entire tournament.

Little Jonny Jackson a 6 year old at 43 pounds won two matches and lost two matches during the tournament. His last match was an All-American match where if he'd have won it he would have finished in the top six places, but fell just a little short. Jackson Marchant also won a match in the Championship round winning his first match and then losing his next two before being eliminated from the tournament. Michael Pugh lost his first two matches and was eliminated from the tournament, but did very well on the hard luck bracket winning both matches among wrestlers who had lost their first two matches of the day. Overall, the Bluebirds got 7 wins against the toughest competition and found out just how high the bar is nationally.

  • Layne Hatcher, 4th Place at 75 pounds
